Escarpment Pinot Noir 2015, Martinborough

Pinot Noir can be rather beautiful when aged, but you first have to let it take that journey in proper cellar conditions. All too often we drink great wine too young.

I am tasting the 2015 from Escarpment and it is indeed telling a story of place and time with aromas of the earth with silty soils and stones then fruit and barrel spices of bracken and vanilla, dusty clove and dried herb. The fruits suggest strawberry and drying cherry, old roses and fallen leaves then a touch of black currant. A mushroom and gentle savoury quality begins to emerge after several minutes in glass. On the palate a wine of finesse and elegance, an abundance of fine tannins, acidity is still strong, fruits and non fruit flavours reflect the soil and variety. Most of all this wine has a deep complexity which grows as the wine relaxes, becomes ambient, and reveals all it has. An excellent example for enjoyment from 2024 or continued cellaring from now through 2030.
