Stonecroft Zinfandel 2019, Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay

Stonecroft Zinfandel.png

Known as Primitivo in Italy and Crljenak kaštelanski in Croatia - Zinfandel is grown in California and New Zealand (among other countries).

This example has aromas of fresh cherries and boysenberries, crushed blackberries and black plums. There’s plenty of barrel smoke and wood aromas with vanilla and baked coconut scents. Very youthful, very inviting. On the palate - plush, fruity, youthful, tense and dry. Flavours mirror the nose with ripe fruits then a transition into slightly tarter expressions of the same - this would be classic in northern Californian versions as well - bringing greater palate expression and mouthfeel. Plenty of youthful acidity with moderate tannins. A fine example, warm, generous and tasty. Perfect alternative to Merlot and some Pinots Noir. Drink upon purchase and through 2025+.
